Tonight is the January UCFSD school board work session, held in the UCF District office on the south side of Unionville High School. (All meeting materials are available here)
A few items on the Agenda are of special interest to me:
1. Proposal to Develop Strategic Plan. A great education brings life opportunities to our kids. If we want UCF to be truly great, we need a common vision for excellence, and a long-term plan to achieve it. I would like to see the District develop a strategic plan — where are we now, where do we want to go, and how will we get there.
2. 2015-2016 School Calendar. We will discuss the proposed school calendar. We will also review the survey results from the community, and comments received. There appears to be a strong majority to keep spring break as a full week in its traditional place on the calendar. The September calendar has four 4-day school weeks, which does not make sense to some in the community.
3. New Policies. We will review several dozen proposed updates to our school board policies, including discussion of Policy 214 on class rank. (Our present practice is only report student’s decile rank to colleges.) The recommendation is to keep our present policy on class rank. However, I have heard some good reasons from members of the community to reconsider this policy prior to the fall 2015 college application period. Some members of our community will present their viewpoint during public comments.
4. Opportunity to refinance school bonds at a lower interest rate. Details will be presented at the meeting … curious to see if we can strengthen the district’s financial position while also reducing operating expenses (interest payments).
As always, the meeting is open to the public, and there will opportunities for public comment at the beginning and end of the meeting. Come join in and help shape the future of our schools.
